Warning – May Contain Spoilers!
Normally I wouldn’t bother, but this has got me so wound up at the moment, why not stick a blog about it up.
Game developers, please take note and don’t do either of the following two things because they just annoy people so much it is rediculous, stupid and I’ll never play your game again.
1. Don’t put an invincible enemy in, not matter how funny or challenging you think it may be. All it does is annoy people (it annoyed me hugely because I got to the endwith barely any ammo left after trying to kill the invicble beast only for him to keep reviving). If you really do insist on it for some god foresaken reason, atleast provide the opportunity to replenish the majority of what you make people waste. For this reason, I certainly won’t be even attempting Dead Space 2 or any other difficulty above normal (and probably never again).
2. In multiplayer, ensure that your players aren’t left frustrated by ignorant bastards who can easily abuse a system to avoid ruining their stats by quitting a game as the host and abandoning any recollection of the game to the multiplayer servers. I started Dead Space 2 multiplayer online for a bit of fun tonight and certainly won’t be playing it again. 4 times I played a game, 3 times in the last few seconds of the round the game quit with a message I’ve lost connection to the host, the forth it was on the damn scoreboard (I mean, what the hell?). Someone quitting from the scoreboard and I lose the 2 levels I’d just watch be added on. What a joke.
So congratulations EA/Visceral Games – You’ve completely ruined Dead Space 2 for me now.
In followup to the last blog post, I suppose to an extent I should appologise. Everything with my profile was fine, although still not as easy as it should have been. But when you apply a computer policy to a machine and remove all the security so only users can read the policy, it’s no wonder it never works…..
For the past 2 weeks I’ve been working on a project at work which is to set up a thin client system. After loads of research I decided to go for a plain Microsoft Remote Desktop Services system using Thinstation and naively thought that the hardest part would be setting up the server. How stupid of me….
The server was created, setup and up and running ready for clients within 4 hours. Thinstation on the other hand never worked once! I spent a whole week on trying to force it to work and made no progress what so ever. Thankfully Microsoft released Windows Thin PC just about the same time and I had that setup and running on a computer within a day. Then comes the next part – A Mandatory profile for my users on the Server. What a joke! In windows XP and server 2003, you setup your profile, copy it using the special Copy To button which altered the security and you were off. Not the case with Windows 7, 2008 or 2008 R2, you are only allowed to copy the Default Profile. What a fat load of use that is! I’m not going to sysprep my server just so I can create a default profile which I can then copy but still won’t contain all the items I want to configure, what a waste of time that would be! So I have now spent another week trying to create a profile and still haven’t got anywhere, guess I’m going to have a fun summer trying to work this out then….. thanks Microsoft (not)
So, it’s been over a month once again and I haven’t posted on here. So I thought I would with just a quickblog.
Only 2 weeks left until the summer holidays begin, and I personally can’t wait.
(update over, wasn’t that quick!)
Series doesn’t seem quit right, need to look that up. However, you may have noticed it’s 2 blog posts this week so I must have lots of free time!
The purpose of this post? My thoughts on game series.
I have favourite games series like anyone else, for example Ratchet and Clank, Legacy of Kain, Grand Theft Auto and so on. Loads of people have favourites and in a way they are some games studios main business. However there comes a point where a series creates a problem for it’s self. I’m the sort of person who likes to know the background, know whats happened and try to understand it. It doesn’t always work but atleast I try! And some series don’t have a problem with that.
Lets take a look at Ratchet and Clank. Each game is a standalone story, you don’t need to know the background behind it although it does add to your understanding (for example looking at the recent games, you’d never guess that Quark was an enemy in the first game would you?). You can pick a game up and off you go, with the exception of what the US call the Future series, where you have a mini trilogy.
Grand Theft Auto has the same advantage, each game is a sepertae one, all falling under the same banner. You then come to a series like Legacy of Kain, like Killzone, where the story is a huge part of it. I’ve no idea what happened in Killzone 1, who some of the characters are and so on. Legacy of Kain, a huge part of it is the backstory, while the backstory is in a state of flux to an extent with paradox’s altering history, the understanding is required to make sense of certain parts.
Time moves on, technology moves on and parts of that story become legend in effect. The game starts to vanish in availabilty, it’s discussed by long term players, archived on the web for reading but you never get to experience the beginning. That causes a huge problem for a series if you need to keep the story alive with the likes of Legacy of Kain. It’s spanned 2 console generations now, I’d love to have a new game to tidy up the story ends and finish it off and have huge hope for it (certain knowloedge I have from over a year ago now and a recent thread on the Eidos forums) however the longer the delay, the harder it is to continue the story while continuing to capture a fresh audiance who can keep up with a story. Games like Ratchet and Clank have a little problem with this, but not to the same level.
While I love series games, there is a point I suppose where you have to decide to finish it, or atleast leave it in an area where you can go off in a new direction with it without upsetting your long term fans.
The tough truth of business while sustaining loyalty, I wouldn’t want to be in that position….
This post is regarding the current status of the Playstation Store (which at this point in time is still down). I got extremely fed up (understatement) the day that SCE started bringing up the network. It started in the US, was up in the US by about 8am UK time I believe and then a blog post stating and update will follow shortly with details for the UK/EU being brought back up.
Cue, about 8 hours of silence (guessing rough time because I can’t go and look it up at the moment). Nothing announced, no updates, the only thing that was ever said was we’ll update you shortly and that was it. Eventually though about 12 hours after the US was brought up it started coming up in the UK. I realise time needed to be taken to test and ensure the stability of the network, but it doesn’t cost much or take much time to keep your customers updated.
However, this is about the PSN store. One of SCE’s and any logical business link is to integrate everything as tightly as possible to ensure consistancy of your data – SCE did this and hence the new problem. A post on the Playstation UK forums recently caught my eye stating how unprofessional and damaging it is for the Store to be down so long and to remain down would continue to cause damage to the Sony brand. While true, what would be more damaging is if the store was brought up, incompatabile with changes made to improve security resulting in more headaches due to problems with transactions not occuring properly, instability or just plain not working.
Someone then replied with a post stating that it would have been more logical to put a read only copy of the store up – a flaw with this? You still have to do all the same ammount of work to ensure this read only copy is still compatabile with the existing infrastructure, with any changes that are made, can’t have any transactions carried out on it and will then be duplicating the work to bring up the full store.
So you are duplicating your work, not likely to have it up any quicker and then still going to delay the full return of the store. In my humble opinion, Sony have done the logical thing regarding the store, however I still wonder just what is going on and why everything is taking so long (my reasoning behind this? SCE were moving their servers in the US anyway, the old servers would have had all their data preserved and available for analysis, but hey what do I know).
Anyway, with this action, keep going SCE – and in other news the store should be up by the end of the week!
since I last updated this blog – that’s what happens you see I get bored and just leave it be. Thes reason for my return? The hosting is up for renewal once again so was just checking what I had and what’s using it.
The answer? I have a lot of rubbish and the rubbish is all being used. 3 Years I’ve held ijeffers.com now and it’s proved suprisingly useful. Not just because it’s removed my reliance on external sources for hosting images (which I then subsequently forget the usernames and passwords too) but also for experimentation, testing and learning – WordPress being the pime example.
I can now confirm that WordPress is one of the best and most adaptable webscripts out there in my humble opinion and would recommend any small website starting up to seriously consider it as a starting point!
Incidentally, while still not pretty or nice and containing a lot of bloated code to be removed, my modified Typepad Antispam plugin has stopped 2,596 to date! What’s more astounding is that even the widget has started working correctly too!
Take that spammers!
Out of all my blog posts on here, there seem to be only 2 which attract spam posts and I’m sure by the name of the title, you can guess which 2 they are.
So let’s see vBulletin, are you the cause of my spam problem as well as producing shoddy software? Might as well put an update in, vBulletin 4 has been release for over a year and has 264 issues which have been open for over a year including 1 Critical and 25 Major!
Nice going there on the agile development!
